The land

The land here at Millican Reserve is a vital resource. Shaped by the rich ecosystems of the post oak savannah, it’s an integral component of the health of our community. As growth continues to impact natural spaces, the Conservancy is committed to protecting this landscape and preserving its ecological integrity. By safeguarding native habitats, we help ensure a thriving ecosystem that benefits the health of both nature and people. This shared landscape not only reflects the natural heritage of the post oak savannah but also serves as a foundation for a healthier, more sustainable future for everyone who calls it home.

THE LAND:
PRESERVING PLACE, PROTECTING HEALTH

POST OAK
SAVANNAH

Millican Reserve lies within the post oak savannah, a unique landscape once common across central and eastern Texas. Today, it’s considered a declining ecosystem due to widespread development and land conversion. By conserving native plant communities and limiting disturbance, the Conservancy helps protect this rare mosaic of woodlands, prairies, and riparian zones. Preserving the post oak savannah is central to the mission of building a healthy community around nature.

LAND
STEWARDSHIP

The Conservancy actively restores and maintains native habitats across Millican Reserve. This includes removing invasive species, managing erosion, and supporting soil health through low-impact methods. Supplemental shelter—like brush piles—provides cover for reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals in areas with limited natural protection. These practices ensure that the land remains functional, biodiverse, and resilient over time.

REDUCING FRAGMENTATION

As development pressures continue to rise across Texas, protecting large, connected landscapes is more important than ever. Working with Millican Reserve’s partners, the Conservancy uses long-term planning, conservation corridors, and intentional land use to limit fragmentation and preserve ecological integrity. These efforts support wildlife movement, protect water quality, and maintain the natural character of the region. Healthy land benefits everyone who lives, explores, and learns here.
