Gardening 101: Winter Gardening

Keep your garden growing through the cold season with our hands-on workshop, Gardening 101: Winter Gardening, at The Farm at Millican Reserve!  In this class, participants will learn how to maintain a productive and healthy garden during the winter months in Brazos County. We’ll cover essential strategies for planning, protecting, and cultivating crops that thrive when temperatures drop. Topics include: 
  • Winter Crop Selection: Learn which vegetables, herbs, and greens perform best in Brazos County’s winter conditions — including leafy greens, root crops, and cold-tolerant herbs. 
  • Frost and Freeze Protection: Explore how to use row covers, cold frames, and mulch to protect your plants from temperature swings and frost damage. 
  • Soil Health and Winter Care: Understand how to maintain soil structure, fertility, and microbial activity through cooler months. 
  • Succession and Overwintering Crops: Learn how to plan for early spring harvests by overwintering select crops like garlic, onions, and carrots. 
  • Pest and Disease Management: Discuss common cold-weather pests and how to manage them organically. 
  Participants will leave with a practical understanding of how to keep their garden growing, productive, and ready for spring — even during the coldest time of year.    Parking Please use the Farm Entrance to Millican Reserve (19851 FM 2154). Designated parking is at the Basecamp grassy area. You MAY NOT PROCEED past the Farm area in your vehicle.  All outdoor events are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. Registered attendees will be notified via email in the event of a cancellation.
