Gardening 101: Texas Summer Gardening 

Learn how to keep your garden thriving through the toughest months of the year in our Gardening 101: Texas Summer Gardening workshop at The Farm at Millican Reserve.  Texas summers can be brutal, but with the right knowledge and preparation, your garden can continue producing well into the heat. This class will cover essential strategies and tips for maintaining a healthy and productive summer garden, including: 
  • Heat-Tolerant Crops: Learn which vegetables, herbs, and flowers perform best in Texas summer conditions. 
  • Soil and Mulch Management: Discover how to protect your soil, maintain moisture, and keep roots cool through heavy mulching and organic matter. 
  • Watering Strategies: Explore efficient irrigation techniques, watering schedules, and ways to minimize water loss. 
  • Pest and Disease Management: Identify common summer pests and diseases and learn practical organic management methods. 
  • Shade and Protection: Understand how to use shade cloths, companion planting, and natural barriers to protect plants from excessive sun exposure. 
  • Succession Planning: Prepare for late-summer planting and transition into your fall garden. 
  Whether you’re new to gardening or looking to improve your summer yields, this workshop will give you the knowledge and confidence to beat the heat and grow successfully through the season.  Parking Please use the Farm Entrance to Millican Reserve (19851 FM 2154). Designated parking is at the Basecamp grassy area. You MAY NOT PROCEED past the Farm area in your vehicle.  All outdoor events are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather.
